ECHOSENSE is a modular smart garment that integrates a sound localization system, transmitting sound direction information to the user through vibration motors on the shoulders. Its modular clothing and chip design not only offer versatile styling options suitable for various occasions but also reduce replacement and maintenance costs, making it more affordable and effectively easing the financial burden on users. Additionally, this design aligns with the trends of environmental protection and sustainability, enabling technology to enhance barrier-free living while being more eco-friendly.

This research explores the intersection of fashion, technology, and sustainability, with a focus on smart wearables and modular design. Through ECHOSENSE, it integrates assistive technology with principles of Chinese design, emphasizing functionality, adaptability, and aesthetics to enhance sensory experiences for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. Aligned with China’s circular economy initiatives, the project prioritizes recyclable materials, low-waste modular systems, and responsible supply chains, incorporating 3D-printed biodegradable resin casings and a buy-back program to extend product lifespan. By bridging fashion and assistive technology, ECHOSENSE promotes social inclusivity through user-centered research and offline trial experiences in China’s urban environments. This work contributes to the advancement of smart fashion, demonstrating how human-centered innovation, sustainability, and cultural relevance can shape the future of wearable technology.
