She was deeply attracted by these unique designs full of Kyrgyz tradition and nomadic cultural elements. With a yearning for the blue waters of the distant Lake Issyk Kul and a free nomadic life, she excitedly brought the blind box home and couldn't wait to open it. As the box was gently opened, she took the one she had long admired, and her face was instantly filled with surprise and satisfaction, as if she had crossed thousands of mountains and rivers in an instant, feeling the vastness and freedom of Kyrgyzstan. This is not only a simple open-box experience, but also a cultural exploration and the realization of dreams. It is full of longing for exotic customs and unknown journeys, bringing endless joy and surprises to the audience.

In the design process of the "Kyrgyz Dream" series, we started with field research, went deep into Kyrgyzstan, and personally experienced and visited the local traditional culture and daily life. The majesty of the Tianshan Mountains, the blue of Issek Lake, the nomadic spirit of the Kyrgyz people, and their wool felt handicrafts passed down from generation to generation have deeply touched us. These cultural elements become the foundation of our design. Through exchanges and cooperation with local universities, we discussed with Kyrgyz designers how to inherit and innovate traditional culture in the context of globalization and digitalization.
Through our research, we have captured Kyrgyzstan's unique clothing style and cultural symbols, especially the colors and details of traditional Kyrgyz women's clothing. Each Nuli Blind Box doll is designed to reflect the natural beauty and cultural characteristics of Kyrgyzstan, incorporating symbolic elements such as braided hair and ethnic embroidery. At the same time, we also inject the moral of beauty, blessing and expectation into each design, endowing them with more profound cultural connotation.
In the presentation of the blind box design, we express our exploration and discovery of traditional culture through these images with the charm of Kyrgyz culture. Each blind box is not only a work of art, but also carries our respect and understanding of the culture of this distant country. We hope that through this design, consumers can feel the vast land, free nomadic spirit and profound cultural heritage of Kyrgyzstan at the moment of opening the box, and also enable this culture to find its own in today's globalization. New voice.
Our work is not only to display the traditional culture of Kyrgyzstan, but also to promote cultural exchange and understanding through design, so that more people can enter the beauty and dream of Kyrgyzstan through this small blind box.
Design Innovation in 1. Cross-cultural Communication
Against the magnificent background of the Tianshan Mountains, China and Kyrgyzstan, two countries with a long history and unique culture, are closely linked through "Belt and Road Initiative. Our Kyrgyz Dream series was born in such a context of historical convergence and cultural collision. On the basis of in-depth investigation of Kyrgyz traditional culture and wool felt technology, the design team not only discussed how to recreate it with modern design language, but also realized cross-border and interdisciplinary design practice exploration with the help of international exchange platform.
In October 2023, our design team started from Zhuhai, Guangdong, and participated in the "International Young Student Designers Exchange" project jointly initiated by the Future Design School of Beijing Normal University and the Youth Design Thinking Innovation and Development Center. During the 12-day cultural exchange tour of Kyrgyzstan, teachers and students had in-depth exchanges with teachers and students of many local universities such as Kyrgyz National Technical University, Issek Lake National University, and Osh National University. This trip not only builds a platform for cooperation between multinational universities, but also provides a rich soil for design thinking under different cultural backgrounds.
During the exchange, we witnessed how Kyrgyzstan strives to integrate local traditional culture into innovative design in the context of globalization and digitalization, enhance the national image and help the tourism industry to prosper. This practice of combining tradition with innovation provides us with valuable experience and enlightens us how to better learn from and promote the modern transformation of traditional culture in the Chinese design community.
New Design under the 2. Cultural Ties
The "Kyrgyz Dream" series of works take traditional dolls as the carrier, and skillfully integrate Kyrgyz national costumes, historical imprints and natural landscapes into modern tide play design. While respecting the essence of traditional craftsmanship, the designer has created a dialogue mode between tradition and modernity, handicraft and industry through simple and modern modeling and innovative material technology.
In China, the revival of intangible cultural heritage and the modern application of traditional crafts are becoming important propositions for design innovation. Our creative practice shows how to use the medium of design to meet the individual needs of young consumers while promoting and spreading the charm of oriental culture. At the same time, with the international perspective of "Belt and Road Initiative", our design not only serves the market, but also carries the mission of cultural exchange and social identity, helping to build a broader international design cooperation network.
"Kyrgyz Dream" is not only the result of a design practice, but also an in-depth dialogue between China and Kyrgyzstan at the intersection of history, culture and modern innovation. Through the exchange of visits and cooperation of transnational young designers, we have brought the unique traditional culture of Kyrgyzstan into the contemporary design context, and also provided a new cross-cultural communication mode for the Chinese design community. In this process, design has become an important carrier to connect different civilizations, promote social interaction and promote environment-friendly innovation, so that the ancient tradition in the context of globalization coruscate new vitality.
We come from the Future Smart Life Lab of the Future Design Institute of Beijing Normal University. Our laboratory is committed to the theoretical research of innovative design and the reshaping of traditional culture, as well as the integration of design research and innovative practice based on technological change in the context of future production, lifestyle and social changes.
