The Furniture First Aid Kit (F.F.A.) Furniture First Aid Kit is a modular, editable 3D printed joint connector designed to help people quickly assemble or repair wooden furniture, or make new items from waste materials. Designer Dan connects the new global culture of repair and restoration with the goal of supporting and inspiring the ability of people to repair things themselves at home and in the workplace. The F.F.A. is a bridge that connects discarded furniture or materials with a sustainable lifestyle. Inspired by the "stooping cultures bending culture" and the traditional Chinese wooden butterfly key repair method, we tried to repair and redesign the neglected waste materials, and finally determined the sustainable manufacturing method of 3D digital printing bioplastic (polylactic acid) as the final product scheme. Choosing to combine waste materials with modern technology to create a new system of edited furniture, the designer hopes that each piece of furniture is a resource that cannot be ignored in the future.
The design of FFA furniture first aid kit is inspired by the butterfly tenon structure of traditional Chinese restoration furniture and the folk craft of "porcelain" to repair ceramics. Butterfly tenon engages wood cracks in dovetail form, curium porcelain stitches ceramic fragments with metal "staples", both of which take repair marks as aesthetic symbols. This oriental philosophy of "turning incomplete into perfect" is transformed into detachable modular connection system in design, which not only continues the traditional life wisdom of "making the best use of everything", but also responds to the needs of contemporary circular economy. In Chinese culture, the restoration of wooden furniture is an inheritance of spiritual culture and traditional handicrafts. However, compared with the purchase of new products, the process and results of repairing furniture cost a lot of manpower and time. In the process of collecting furniture materials that can be made, preference is given to furniture waste materials from local community recycling sites. At the same time, in the process of using FFA, it also promotes the participation and connectivity of community residents. The "new furniture" that uses these combinations is not limited to production places, using functions and design methods to create open-source and shared sustainable furniture products.
