“Two Sides of One Coin: Reflections and Transformations” is based on the Qing Dynasty’s painting Shi Yi Shi Er and skillfully connects the subtle metaphors, either figurative or abstract, between contemporary artworks and the ancient painting. Starting from art, searching for art that corresponds to it, and returning from one origin to another, is the original intention of the exhibition’s conception. By layering and intertwining different typefaces, I aim to create an effect that is both ancient and contemporary.
The exhibition dismantles the philosophical propositions embedded in Shi Yi Shi Er, taking on the one hand the transformation and borrowing of its ancient aesthetic images in the context of contemporary art - even if these correspondences are coincidental and facilitated by the artist’s inadvertent state of consciousness; on the other hand, the aura of the ancient paintings seems to serve as a reference for reflection on the shortcomings brought about by the acute development and lack of ultimate meaning in the process of modernization, which is also a common theme in the creations of the artists selected for the exhibition and worldwide.
