From 2021 to 2022, the Rong Design Library selected two materials-wood skin and metal-for the research on the planarization application of traditional Chinese handicrafts with the support of the intelligent high-setting brand Muli Muwai.
We have combed the materials and processes related to wood skin and metal, showing how the log becomes wood skin and then how the wood skin is treated and used, as well as the performance of the plane process of metal in four major plates: color, luster, texture and structure. We have summarized and sorted these two materials, and we have systematically output the process of the two materials and processes in the form of text and visualization, A set of research materials (including maps, material boxes and material sets) was produced. Find inspiration points from it to create new textures and material designs.
"Rong Design Library (Rong Contemporary Art Design Center, Yuhang District, Hangzhou City)" was founded in 2015 by PINWU in Hangzhou, China, with the mission of promoting the continuation and rebirth of traditional Chinese handicrafts in contemporary design. As the world's first library of traditional Chinese handicraft materials, we deconstruct traditional crafts into material language through systematic research and innovation, providing designers and artists with a new way of understanding and application.
Chinese traditional handicrafts carry rich cultural memories, but under the impact of industrialization and globalization, many skills are facing loss. From 2015 to 2019, through in-depth research in 32 provinces across the country and the collation of more than 8000 material samples, we recorded the current situation and process details of handicrafts. These data also laid the foundation for the birth of "Financial Design Library-Process Research Diagram.
"Process Research Diagram" was originally a tool to help researchers sort out process methods and material handling processes. With the accumulation of research experience, we found that this graphic tool can evolve into a knowledge carrier that clearly transmits process information, which can inspire designers to dig inspiration from materials and make innovative applications. Since 2016, we have researched and produced a total of 16 process study maps.
From 2021 to 2022, the Financial Design Library, with the support of the intelligent high-setting brand Muli Muwai, selected the "wood skin" and "metal" processes to carry out the research on the application of planarization. The "Wood Skin Material Research Chart", through the main logic of "log-wood skin-science and technology wood", systematically shows the evolution path of wood skin from wood selection and cutting to color and texture processing, and explores its sustainable possibility in modern design. Based on the visual effect, the metal plane process is divided into four dimensions: color, luster, texture and structure, and is subdivided into 28 process types.
The research map is not only a tool for recording traditional crafts, but also a source of inspiration for designers in material exploration: it not only serves designers, but also has a broader meaning at the cultural level. Through intuitive graphical representation, we provide an easy-to-understand tool for design education and design practice, enabling designers to draw inspiration from the logic and aesthetics of traditional crafts.
Moreover, the design of Rong · research map also promotes the revival and inheritance of traditional skills. We try to help the handicraft inheritors to establish cooperation with the brand (this time it is Muli Muwai), and integrate the research results into the production and creation of materials for their actual needs (this time it is wood skin and metal materials), creating new economic and social values for the craft practitioners. We believe that the system not only connects the traditional and contemporary, but also provides a new way to integrate nature, culture and technology for future design.
Founded in 2015 by PINWU, the Financial Design Library is a non-profit organization and is a library of traditional Chinese handicraft materials.
The core mission is to deconstruct traditional Chinese handicrafts into materials and processes, provide the results of material research to designers and artists around the world, and encourage them to use deconstruction thinking to cooperate with traditional handicrafts to promote the regeneration of traditional handicrafts and the creation of contemporary design.
